Umeno Genji strikes a body kick to Irish challengter Stephen Meleady
Umeno Genji scored a unanimous points win over Irishman Stephen Meleady to win WBC Muaythai Super Featherweight International Championship at Kurakuen Hall, Tokyo Dome, Japan on April 13.
Warrior Meleady fought on after being cut to the face by Genji?s elbow shots, but lost the thrilling championship 50/46, 50/46, 50/47.
Referee Saenchai Thongkraisaen, in consultation with the ringside doctor, allowed the contest to continue after Meleady's sustained a cut early in the second round.
The judges all agreed that Genji was the better fighter despite the close and fiercely combative contest.
All Japanese fighters at the event performed the Wai Kru and Ram Muaythai pre-fight ritual. A retirement ceremony was held for two outstanding fighters Nakasuga Yoshinori and Yoneda Takashi.
The promoter of the championship event was Kyoji Saito, President of New Japan Kick Boxing Federation, who was awarded WBC Muaythai Oriental and Pacific Promoter of the Year for quality events during 2013.
